Free Leak Detection Test You Can Do From Home!

Did you know that there is a simple way to detect a pool leak from the comfort of your own back yard? The bucket test is a commonly accepted method of detecting leaks. It is incredibly easy to perform, and all you need is a 5 gallon bucket!

First, you will fill the bucket 2/3 of the way full with pool water. Next you will set the bucket down on either the first or second step in your pool. It should be at least 5 inches deep. Using a permanent marker, draw a line where the current water level is on the inside of the bucket. Then, turn off the pool pump, and trace the water line on the outside of the bucket. Next, you will simply turn your pool pump back on.

Check on your bucket after 24 hours have passed. If the mark on the outside of your bucket has decreased further than the line on the inside, your pool is experiencing a leak. If they have decreased similarly, then your water loss is due to evaporation.

Most pools lose about a ¼ of an inch of water each day due to evaporation. However, this could change depending on the humidity of the area you live in. If you do have a leak, be sure to get it fixed right away. Additionally, if you are losing water due to evaporation, you should do your best to restore the lost water. Having the correct amount of water in your pool can help to keep your pool chemistry perfectly balanced. When your pool chemistry is balanced, you do not need to spend as much money on chemicals and maintenance!
