Protect yourself with the right sunscreen!
With summer right around the corner, the weather is getting sunnier, and temperatures are getting warmer. A day at the beach or a swim in the pool can be an excellent way to cool off, but fun in the sun requires a few precautions. As you spend time outside, ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun damage your skin and increase your risk of skin cancer. Sunscreen is a great way to help protect yourself from UV rays while enjoying time spent outside. However, with endless choices, it can be hard to pick the sunscreen that’s best for your needs. Check out these tips to help you choose the best sunscreen for your needs.
- Ensure your sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Most sunscreens have you covered for UVB rays, but it was more recently discovered that UVA rays also increase your risk of skin cancer.
- Check the ingredients. When a sunscreen is labeled broad-spectrum, it should contain the following essential ingredients benzophenones (oxybenzone), cinnamates (octylmethyl cinnamate and cinoxate), sulisobenzone, salicylates, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, avobenzone (Parsol 1789) and ecamsule (Mexoryl SX). Without these ingredients, your could be missing vital protection against UVB and UVA rays.
- Pay attention to Sun Protection Factor (SPF). You should have a sunscreen that has an SPF of at least 15, which means that you could go 15 times longer in the sun without burning.
- Invest in waterproof sunscreen. Just because you’re in the water, doesn’t mean that you don’t need sun protection. A water-proof sunscreen helps to keep you protected even when you are in the pool.
- Re-apply throughout the day. Be sure to reapply every couple hours or so to maximize your sun protection.
