Simple Pool Maintenance Tips

Owning a pool requires much more than having plenty of bathing suits to choose from all year round. It also requires regular pool maintenance to keep your pool looking its best. Keep these pool maintenance tips in mind to help avoid any serious issues with your backyard pool.

  • Chlorine level – maintaining the proper chlorine level in your pool will help to ensure that algae does not begin to grow. While having enough chlorine will prevent algae, having too much can be dangerous. Make sure that your pool’s chlorine level is always kept at 1 to 3 parts per million.
  • pH range – keeping the pH range of your pool between 7.2 and 7.6 will help to ensure that your pool water stays clear, and will help avoid the growth of algae. If your pool has a pH level that is too high, it is much more likely to fill with algae.
  • Algaecides – regularly administered forms of algaecides will make sure that any algae that is in your water will not multiply. Most algaecides will interfere with algae’s ability to complete photosynthesis, which will then cause the algae to starve before it has a chance to multiply.
  • Patching and brushing – if you have a concrete lined pool use a steel brush to keep the sides clean. If your pool is lined with a nylon liner, use a soft scrub brush to keep the walls clean without causing any damage. Patching and brushing will help to dislodge any algae colonies that have formed, which will then be sucked into your pool filter, ensuring your pool stays clean.
