If you’re getting ready to open your pool for the first time this summer, you may be wondering what supplies you will need! If this is the case, you came to the right place! Let’s take a minute to examine the types of chemicals you can use for your pool, and when the appropriate times are to use them.
Prior to putting any chemicals into the water, make sure to take note of your pool’s condition. Repair any cracks or leaks before taking further steps to open to your pool. If your pool needs to be drained, then do so. Are you still wondering how to do this? If so, take a breath- it’s relatively simple! Drain your entire pool, then immediately take apart the hydrostatic valve. During this step, time is of the essence! This will decrease any lingering water pressure underground. At this time, you can clean the interior of your pool. Use acid or chlorine to do so, then refill the pool.
If your pool does not need to be drained, you can simply use a vacuum to get rid of any lingering debris. Typically you will lose some water during this process, so make sure to restore it, then add 1 gallon of shock for every 5,500 gallons of water. Your next step is to test the chlorine levels. Add alkalinity or pH as needed to make sure your pool water is balanced.
